张献忠虽然降了朝廷，但并不受信任。朝廷不发粮饷，又不封给官职，各级官吏还要敲诈勒索。张献忠的有心率兵重新造反，无奈外有左良玉20万大军包围，内有巡按御使林铭球坐地监视，难以动手。李自成来到谷城，希望张献忠与他相互呼应，重新起义。张献忠虽有此心，但又不愿将来推翻了明朝，李自成与自己争夺天下。军师徐以显也力劝张献忠除掉李自成，以绝后患。可张献忠自己也看出，没有李闯王，自己一支孤军也难成功。两人谈判再三，张献忠犹豫不定，终不能决。李自成于危机四伏中沉着镇定，与张献忠坦诚相见，张献忠顾及绿林义气，否定了杀害李闯王之主张，两人虽各抱目的，但终于结成同盟。一年后，两支义军果然共同推翻了明王朝。
