影片根据女作家安吉拉-玛斯特瑞塔的畅销小说改编，以女性视角讲述了一个墨西哥女人的个人命运，而从她身上发生的一系列事件中，亦可以看出整个墨西哥社会发展的轨迹。导演罗贝尔托-施耐德之前只拍过一部电影——1995年的《两个罪犯》，不过此片当年甫一亮相就获得佳评，在墨西哥艾瑞尔电影奖中获得最佳电影处女作奖，而身为编剧的他还入围了该奖的最佳编剧和导演奖。《撕开我的人生》是罗贝尔托-施耐德从事幕后制片工作13年来拍摄的第一部剧情长片，非常成功。
