故事发生在16世纪的法国农村，马丁（伯纳德-皮亚里·唐纳狄欧 Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu 饰）是一个整天无所事事游手好闲的男人，有一天，他突然抛弃了妻子贝特朗德（娜塔莉·贝伊 Nathalie Baye 饰）和两个可爱的孩子，就此下落不明。
一晃眼7年过去，马丁既没有出现过，贝特朗德亦没有收到他的死讯。和他的突然失踪一样，一天，马丁又再度现身了。马丁告诉贝特朗德，这些年来他一直在帮助法国国王南征北伐，而让贝特朗德感到不可思议的是，马丁的行为举止仿佛变了一个人似的，温文尔雅又勤劳肯干。虽然村里的人都认为这个马丁是个冒牌货，但贝特朗德却坚信，这就是她七年前失踪的丈夫。
