故事情节由《迷失》制片人构思，描述了一个发生在现代社会里的“黑色童话故事”。
28岁的Emma（詹妮弗·莫里森 Jennifer Morrison 饰）从小就被父母抛弃，一生都靠自己的努力生活。突然有一天10年前送给别人收养的儿子Henry（杰瑞德·吉尔摩尔 Jared Gilmore 饰）找上门来向她求援。声称Emma来自一个带有童话色彩的平行世界，她是白雪公主和白马王子失踪的女儿！童话书的所有人都被邪恶女王（拉娜·帕瑞拉 Lana Parrilla 饰）的诅咒所困，Emma是唯一能解除诅咒的人。Emma对此嗤之以鼻，并将Henry送回了小镇Story Book。奇怪的是，Henry和这座小镇对Emma来说有一种强烈的“吸引力”。她在镇上的所见所闻令她开始怀疑这里的确隐藏着一股不为人知的神秘力量－－难道这里真的是Henry所说的童话世界？
