故事开始于公元1154年，若弗鲁瓦五世去世后，亨利二世（彼德·奥图 Peter O'Toole 饰）继承了王位，长久以来，英国皇室对撒克逊原住民都采取着强硬的压制态度，然而，亨利二世最好的朋友汤姆斯（理查德·伯顿 Richard Burto n 饰）便是一名撒克逊人，在继位之后，亨利二世将他提拔成为了首相。
