1954年的英格兰，在一列开往伦敦的火车上，卢克·菲茨威廉（戴维·荣松 David Jonsson 饰）遇到了平克顿小姐（佩内洛普·威尔顿 Penelope Wilton 饰），平克顿小姐说在英格兰平静的乡村威奇伍德发生了一起连环杀人案，并且推测说下一个被害者将是当地的医生。菲茨威廉不相信她的话，认为那只是她的胡思乱想。
