影片讲述了前世界中量级冠军杰克·拉莫塔在成为冠军前的童年往事以及在成名后跌宕起伏的一生。1937年，正值少年的杰克·拉莫塔为了给父亲赚钱而不得不和各种各样的人比赛，但他受够了这样的生活，他希望可以成为一名职业拳击手。在一次比赛中他因为无意打死了对手而被送进少年监狱。监狱的牧师发现了杰克的潜质并开始教他如何打拳。杰克·拉莫塔就此成为了一代拳王。1963年，前世界中量级冠军杰克·拉莫塔接受参议院调查委员会询问时提到在他十余年职业拳击手生涯中夺冠的那场比赛，这场比赛令他永生难忘。两年后，杰克和萨莉结婚生女，因为没有钱给女儿治病，杰克找到十年未谋面的父亲借钱，但被拒绝。1967年，因为杰克的粗暴，萨莉和他离婚，并带走了他们的女儿。1968年，由于生活所迫，杰克被好友瑞克介绍在餐厅做脱口秀，但因为他拙劣的表演很快就被解雇。虽然生活困窘，但杰克依然活得非常有尊严...
