左文字（水谷豊）の友人の医師?川中義昭（丹波義隆）から、記憶喪失の男（ベンガル）の身元調査を依頼される。男が持っていた宮崎のホテルのマッチと「モリシマミヅキ」という言葉から、左文字は元医師で宮崎の代議士?高村の秘書?森島みづき（羽田美智子）を訪問。みづきは男に心当たりはないというが、男が発見された場所を、説明とは違う「隅田川沿い」と口走り、左文字は疑いを抱く。
やがて、左文字は男の正体をつかむ。男は“坂田公一”という興信所を営む同業者だった。そんな中、隅田川で宮崎出身のホステスの他殺体が見つかる。警察が坂田を殺人事件の犯人と睨む中、左文字は宮崎地方の「仇討ち伝説」から事件のヒントを得る。
