农村青年冬子（施渝）为改变自己的命运，只身来到武汉投靠老乡高平（郭涛），成了一名被武汉人称作“扁担”的挑夫，挣钱仅够勉强度日。
高平为挣快钱，与人联合敲诈，不想中途被同伙打伤，伤愈后，他带冬子去歌舞厅找寻阮红（王彤），以期通过她找出同伙报仇。阮红被带到两人住处，与高平于一夜之间成了情人。接触过程中，冬子渐渐爱上阮红，但阮红更需要的是一个可以改变她命运的男人，然而高平的命运也同她及冬子一样，并不由自己控制。
