盘老五、石牯和赵良是三个普通的放排人。在十年动乱中，他们带着浩劫创伤，漂流在萧水上。烦恼、苦闷与不平缠绕着他们，无法解脱，只好无聊地吵嘴，发泄地殴斗，苦闷地酗酒。夜晚，木排停靠在荒野，石牯上岸去找他那被区革委会主任李家栋逼迫出嫁的未婚妻改秀，遇到了被监督劳动、已经奄奄一息的老区长陈鸣鹤，赶来寻找石牯的盘老五毅然决定，把老区长转移到一个安全的地方。改秀虽然被迫出嫁，但一直是抗婚不从。她闻讯逃出，在河边等到木排，与石牯团聚。改秀上木排后，胆小怕事的赵良担心李家栋追查，盘老五又见义勇为，同意承担起一切后果，这样，才把改秀留到了木排上，跟他们一起漂流。石牯和改秀这对年轻人的遭遇，不禁勾起了盘老五对自己年轻时爱情悲剧的回忆：三十多年前，他与纯真的少女吴爱花有着一段甜美的爱情。但是，他因为散了排而背上了磨盘债，他不忍让吴爱花跟着自己受苦，就主动离散了。他与吴爱花...
