倒霉而又心怀梦想、立志当哲学家的男子Darren Barrenman（克里斯·派恩 Chris Pine 饰），每天忙于在洛杉矶的塔希提图腾公寓区打理游泳池，和跟两个邻居Jack和Diane(德维托和贝宁出演)一起不请自到地参加市议会会议。而随后，Barrenman发现洛杉矶正面临着自《唐人街》以来最大的水源劫案，为此，他与一个关系活络的蛇蝎美女达成不稳定合作，并与腐败的市政官员、心灰意冷的好莱坞式讨厌鬼及神秘的捐赠人打交道，去追查手中握着的每一条线索——以“保护我宝贵的洛杉矶”的名义。
