这部10集的历史剧主要描述百货业先驱者哈里·戈登·塞尔弗里奇（1858-1947）的传奇经历。塞尔弗里奇是美国出生的英国商人，1906年来到英国，开始在伦敦牛津大街建造塞尔弗里奇百货商店。该店于1909年开业，成为百货商店的「始祖」。后来，情妇和赌瘾让塞尔弗里奇失去了巨额家产，在穷困潦倒中死去。与塞尔弗里奇有染的著名女性包括：伊莎朵拉·邓肯（Isadora Duncan），现代舞的创始者，使舞蹈成为人类肢体与感情的自然表达方式，因披肩卷入跑车轮胎中而意外身亡；安娜·帕芙洛娃（Anna Pavlova），俄罗斯芭蕾舞演员，当代著名的舞蹈家，为传播和普及芭蕾舞艺术做出重大贡献。
