故事发生在二十世纪五十年代的美国，米琪（蕾切尔·布罗斯纳罕 Rachel Brosnahan 饰）和丈夫乔伊（迈克尔·泽根 Michael Zegen 饰）结婚多年，两人共同抚养着他们的孩子，生活可谓是幸福而又美满。乔伊一直想要成为一名脱口秀演员，每周末，他都会前往俱乐部登台表演。然而，乔伊的脱口秀事业一直都不温不火。
某天，在表演又一次失败后，乔伊崩溃了，他向米琪坦白自己有了外遇，并且当即收拾行李离开了家，一夜之间，米琪成了一个被丈夫抛弃的女人。悲伤和绝望之中，米琪登上了舞台，借着酒劲进行了一番精彩绝伦的演说，逗得台下满堂大笑。俱乐部的女招待苏西（艾利克斯·布诺斯汀 Alex Borstein 饰）在米琪身上发现了过人的天赋，决定成为她的经纪人。
