《随心逐流》讲述了名叫费利克斯·邦赫弗尔(霍普金斯饰演)的好莱坞电影剧本作家的故事：他在剧本中创造的人物让他自己的生活变得一塌糊涂。观众被带进一次邦赫弗尔想像中的危险旅行。他看到许多历史事件，例如越南战争等，还能拥有剧本人物的思想。
