《电脑狂人》设置在IBM推出首个重要产品——IBM个人电脑之后。前IBM主管人员乔·麦克米伦（李·佩斯饰）打算逆向制造出其前雇主的旗舰产品，并逼迫其现在的公司，卡迪夫电子加入个人电脑之战。麦克米伦招来了戈登·克拉克（史库特·麦克奈利饰）和卡梅伦·豪伊（麦肯齐·戴维斯饰），前者曾是一个出色的工程师，梦想着创造革命性的产品，同时还要应付来自妻子唐娜（凯芮·贝什）的反对，而后者是个情绪不稳定的天才，为了加入麦克米伦的个人电脑项目，她堵上了自己的未来。《电脑狂人》讲述了一个关于创新精神的故事，探寻一段不计后果，站在革命最前沿并为之努力的传奇。
