约翰（理查·基尔 Richard Gere饰）面临着典型的中年危机：即使有着幸福家庭和体面事业，内心的空虚和压力却随着年龄而倍增。他一成不变的生活需要某些催化剂，来重新唤醒内心激情。 每次路过舞蹈室，约翰都会看到舞蹈老师宝琳娜（詹妮弗·洛佩兹 Jennifer Lopez饰）。她美丽而略带神秘的魅力、加上约翰内心期待的某种生活的变化，终于把他带进了里面的舞蹈课程。他报名参加这里的社交舞培训，但令人失望的是老师并不是宝琳娜。更糟糕的是，约翰舞姿笨拙，似乎并不是跳舞的料。 然而，当学舞成为了约翰生活的一部分，当他终于结识了宝琳娜并和她甚为投缘，情况开始有了变化——约翰报名参加了一个芝加哥的舞蹈大赛，而约翰的婚姻，也亮起了红灯。
